My Initial Research

Radicalisation short film – initial research
Through research I have so far explored it appears that radicalisation is not a common topic compared to short films of bullying and depression. I have so far found 11 short films that fully concentrate on radicalisation and exist within the media of YouTube. Although, the 5 I have closely researched surprisingly do not show how to ultimately avoid these influencers/extremists and the lasting impacts radicalisation has on close friends and family. I personally believe I have identified a market gab with these two factors and can use my research to reveal some factors and behaviours that are commonly found in those that have been exposed to extremist ideas, being both informative and relatable to those who may have experienced this behaviour.

Examples of current short films on radicalisation:

As you can see the location begins in the shade of lighting at a train track; the shade of the sun acknowledges the darkness of radicalisation and its terrors and the train builds tension as it connotes to loud noise, fast motion and danger in relation to historical suicide attempts that tend to happen here. This scene setting would work well for my production as it would encourage my audience to feel a motive was impending.
This short film instantly uses intense music to build up the scene, I think this quickly brings in the audience which is important in a short film, as you must grip the viewer’s attention almost instantly, which is especially important for me as I will be on a time scale of 8-15 minutes. Although, this technique could be too overwhelming for my target audience, from 13 above as it and could have a negative impact resulting in them becoming too stressed. Therefore, I will play music in the background but of a more relaxed and familiar tone.
They also use a combination of medium close up and big close up shots which intensifies the emotions of the characters within the scenes. This would also be a useful technique to use in my short film too, as it is important for me to show the audience the emotions of different character well and the effects radicalisation is having on them.

The second short film I will be analysing concentrates on the risks of radicalisation on vulnerable teenagers/young adults.
The short film starts with an over the shoulder conversation between and mother and daughter. The mother is arguing with the daughter over the divorce from the girl’s father, located in a home environment. This technique would work well in my short film as it involves the family side of radicalisation and how home life can have a knock affect on a child’s state of mine. The camera angle would also work well as it shows the relationship off well and clearly to the audience.
There is also a blue tint over the footage which portrays sadness and depression. This therefore shows a clear build up towards the initial radicalisation, which would also support my views that radicalisation starts at home where you become vulnerable and easily exposed.
Her vulnerability then continues in school whereby she is made fun of. As it is later set in a school, we’re instantly made aware of the target audience being a around the same age as my intended audience.
Throughout the short film her sadness increases, which is portrayed through the use of sad music which intensifies throughout. I think this is a good technique but lends itself more towards bullying and I want to focus directly on radicalisation and the internal effects.
The noise of a heart beat in the background also builds tension, which would work well in mine as it isn’t too over whelming for my viewers.
The short film ends with a blackout and a quote.

This short film ‘Prevent’ concentrates on how we can prevent radicalisation.
The film consists of real life experiences and explains the signs and the effects it had on those individuals. It’s filmed in a medium close up, with a black background which encourages the audience to really engage with the person and presents there emotions well, so the audience can see they’re genuine.
Sad music is again used to recognise the desperation to prevent radicalisation. I think it would be effective for me to use this type of sad piano music as it worked well in this short film and would highlight the desperation of the family members and friends involved and for there loved one to find help and get out of the situation.
Towards the end the people stop talking and the music continues to play. On the screen there’re quotes and facts about radicalisation showing to the audience that radicalisation truly happens and the facts justify this.

This short film shows horrific images of the affects of terrorism, which is effective in making the viewers acknowledge, immediately that it is wrong but it would be way too shocking for my target audience and would ultimately scare them making my short film ineffective. Although, I could use images to help my audience visualise things that may not be able to be acted out.

This more humorous take on radicalisation, would be effective towards a younger audience but is simply not serious enough for my take on the subject.
Although, there simplicity in describing radicalisation may be useful to apply to parts of my short film as some viewers may benefit from an easier watch.
