The Joker


The denotation of the Joker creates the image of a psychopath with an extravagant image. The Joker uses his extreme appearance and behavior to defy typical representations such as social and economic class, age and sexuality. His face paint, green hair and unusual costumes disturbs viewers by confusing them while creating a sense of mystery because he's such a complex character but meanwhile being so present and simple to understand. His villainous character plays on what he believes to be social righteousness when in fact his judgement is clouded by his sinister experiences and criminal objectives.

The way he behaves is supported by the music used; eerie melodies with dark sound effects pair up with every scene that he is in, contributing to his villainous motives.



Darth Vader


The intense build up in this rememberable scene, created by the chilling music and siren sound effects immediately shows Darth Vader is approaching.  With a sudden black out, our attention is quickly diverted onto the single red lightsaber which connotes to evil, Darth Vader has returned. This dramatic entrance reinforces his significance on the film and his power justified as he effortlessly strikes the ships crew down.

Furthermore, he wears a long black metal costume with a cloak which shows he holds a lot of power. And the skull mask connotes to death suggesting that he should be feared. Which we know by this clip he was, as men ran and screamed for mercy.



Maleficent



We immediately learn that Maleficent if a Villain as she powerfully strides down a walkway, in complete silence with only the sound of her shoes clicking across the floor. This suggests she was feared by everybody around her, which is reinforced when we see extras huddling in the background uncomfortably.

She wears black horns on her head which connotes to the devil implying she was evil, relating to her name Maleficent which is a play on the word malevolent. Her makeup makes her look ill, relating to the idea of her soul was dead and she was heartless.
Finally, she is seen awkwardly petting a pet crow which links to death, suggesting she encouraged death.

  1. You make some purposeful observations in your analyses Georgia. You give clear indications how the villains are constructed for the audience and you link that nicely to denotation and connotation. You could structure your writing a bit more clearly to help communicate your points but this is not a bad effort. (T) Try to plan the structure of your writing more carefully in future, it will help to make your point more emphatic. Also consider opportunities for using more subject specific terminology.
